Coaching is an honor. The research is filled with suggestions on how to do it effectively. I thought it would be helpful to boil it down. Over the years collaborating with so many wonderful clients, I’ve identified nine critical factors that work. “Work,” being the operative word.
There MUST be:
A fundamental desire to improve — willingness to accept shortfalls, change, and grow professionally — being healthy with yourself.
Basic level of respect, trust, and credibility — opportunity for partnership — not by fear or heavy handiness.
Receptivity to feedback, breaking patterns, and an openness to seeking feedback from the coach — warning signals, when coaching is needed.
Recognition of the uniqueness of the individual employee, both capabilities and liabilities — finding the "good in all."
Ongoing commitment to attain a vision that is understood, valued, and bought into — a first step toward self-empowerment and enabling others.
Willingness to accept, tolerate, and learn from mistakes — that result from calculated business risks and personal exposure — demonstrating support and understanding.
Less concern and preoccupation with image management — letting go of the need to "look good" — being honest and forthright.
Commitment to tool-based planning, preparation, and a call for action — you can't do it "on the fly."
Willingness to go beyond that which has been achieved to reach breakthrough levels of performance — a desire to create and pursue "stretch" goals.
Most people work hardest, not for organizations, but for other people.
Best wishes for continued success,
Rich
